Allergies, Sensitivities and Intolerances

Soon after my son started school, I noticed a red angry rash on his tummy under his belly button. I wasn’t sure what it was but I knew there was something wrong. I watched his diet and made sure I used no chemicals around him or on him, but it persisted and in the end I took him to an acupuncturist. After treatment the rash started to recede but it never totally went away. I decided to go to my doctor who then referred me to a skin specialist. Within minutes of my son and I walking into the specialist’s rooms she knew what was causing the problem.

The day my son started school he began to wear the school uniform, of course, which included a belt with a nickel buckle. His school shirt was not a tuck-in so the nickel buckle was in direct contact with his skin, which caused the rash – he had an allergy to nickel. Removing the contact of the nickel to the skin (by having a shirt that tucked in) got rid of the rash forever.

That was my first exposure to an allergy. My son to this day cannot wear a belt with a nickel buckle that touches his skin. I was relieved there were no tests, just good common sense and knowledge on the part of the skin specialist.

The western world has an epidemic of lifestyle diseases, and allergies are high on the list. In the last 10 years allergies have increased tenfold and it is not getting better. Back in the 60s and 70s when I went to school, we all drank milk for morning tea, and meat pies and sandwiches were on the lunch menu, I didn’t know anyone who couldn’t eat peanuts or tree nuts; in fact, peanut butter sandwiches were a favourite and not banned in any schools I knew. I had one friend whose sister was a genetic coeliac (gluten intolerant), but apart from her, everyone ate wheat. Kids could eat what they wanted without fear of anaphylaxis or some allergic reaction or intolerance.

Was life really like that just 30 or so years ago? This must sound so foreign to the modern mother with children in preschool and primary, where nuts are banned, kids have EpiPens® for emergency reactions to foods, teachers are taught the fundamentals and first aid for allergic reactions, and the need to avoid foods seems to touch every family.

Life was simple then and now it is just so confusing. You have to ask what happened in that short period of time in order for there to be such an epidemic of allergies, sensitivities and intolerances.

My belief is that we have chemically assaulted our bodies and our children by growing foods in conditions where fungicides, pesticides and herbicides are used liberally, which not only affects the food we eat but the people who live near the crop spraying areas. Childhood vaccinations have increased to the point that we are assaulting immature immune systems with jabs with dubious additives, starting within the first 24 hours of life. Medications are now being poured into westerners at a rate of 46,000 in a life time (prescribed and unprescribed), while foods are being eaten that are produced in a chemical laboratory and don’t even resemble any food from nature. Foods are refined, defined, separated, deoderised, hydrogenated, intersterified, fractionated and … you name it, some process has been done to it. Chemicals are lathered onto our skin under the guise of personal care products, shampoo, conditioners, makeup and deodorant. In the name of sanitation, our homes are cleaned with suspect chemicals, our water is treated with suspect chemicals, and the air bombarding our very senses is filled with fresheners and artificial fragrances.

We don’t have control of every chemical that has been put into the environment but we can have control of a lot of the chemicals used on a daily and even hourly basis. I want teenagers and young women and men to be the alert to this, educate themselves and start to change their ways in order to stop this insanity of disease and allergies. Everyone reading this, please pass it on to a young woman or man contemplating having a family. What is scary is that many children take on the allergy, intolerance, and/or sensitivity of the parent. It may take a few generations to repair the damage that has been done in just a few generations, but I have an unshakable faith in the human body.

I believe the body is perfect. I believe the body has the ability to be healthy, and I believe that every human has the right to be healthy. There is a wonderful groundswell of people, scientists and educators who are becoming aware of the craziness of this industrial age; they are learning and then educating others so this wisdom can be passed on. I also believe that in the beginning the chemical, medical, drug revolution had a noble cause – to improve sanitation, living conditions, freedom, health and generally enhance life, but it is now out of control and the repercussions are doing the exact opposite. We no longer have health and freedom, superbugs are the norm, allergies are out of control and allergens now seem to be in every square inch of the planet for those susceptible.

Definitions of Allergy, Sensitivity and Intolerance

Allergy
An allergy is an overreaction by the immune system to a normally harmless substance which is then termed an allergen. Allergens can enter the body via food, inhalation, the skin or injection. Common symptoms include hives, rashes, itching, sneezing and stuffy nose.  A diagnosis of an allergy depends on the one line of defense – IgE

Sensitivity
A sensitivity is very similar to an allergy where the immune system overreacts to an allergen; but even though there is some immunological response, the antigen IgA is not produced in the reaction. Despite the body not mounting an immune response based on IgE it may use another armed force such as IgA or IgG, but current allergy tests do not consider other Ig factors as an allergy and therefore will not call it an allergy.  Most food and chemical reactions are therefore termed sensitivities, when in fact they may be an allergy but with a different part of the immune system being involved.

Intolerance
An intolerance is usually when someone is unable to digest a food due to the lack of an enzyme. A good example of this is a milk intolerance which usually results when the body lacks the enzyme lactase to digest the milk protein lactose.  Interestingly raw milk has lactase, pasteurised milk has no lactase.  I recommend that you read both the allergy and gluten report so that you understand fully the ramifications of foods and chemicals on our overall health.  The following is what I recommend, more detail is given in the reports;

Steps to Helping Heal the Body and Boost the Immune System’s Intelligence

1. Reduce your toxic load by looking at your personal care products and cleaning products
2. Eliminate the allergens as much as possible.
3. Make sure your diet supports your immune system.

Start with the Real Food Reset program. By eating more raw foods in the way of fruits, vegetables, herbs, sprouts, seeds and nuts (if you can) you will enhance your body’s immune system.

4. Create an environment that is safe and free from emotional stress.

It is a well known fact that stress has the ability to impair your immune system and many other systems in the body. Some stress is good but excessive constant stress needs to be addressed.

5. Desensitise to Allergens
Nobody knows for sure what works with regard to treating allergies, as some things work for some and not for others, but I know if an effort is put in then results will be obtained. The idea is to get the body healthy so the immune system has the intelligence to know what is an enemy and what is a foe. Science and medicine do not believe the body is perfect. Science and medicine believe that the body does not have enough vitamin K at birth and it cannot tolerate the pain of a tooth erupting. They believe that the body does not have the capability to fight off bacteria, and thus we have antibiotics. They believe it was ‘built wrong’ but it can be fixed with drugs, whereas I believe and know that the body is perfect and when given the right foods (from nature) and no interference (chemicals etc.) then it takes the chance to make itself healthy and cure itself of modern diseases. I am amazed by the human body and if we look after it, it will look after us.

So, by following the steps I’ve outlined and sourcing more information regarding desensitising the allergens, I feel there is hope for relief from allergies.
